Photographed by our fearless lensman, Patrick McMullan.

The gangster / jazz great look is a hard one to pull off with any measure of success. Too often practitioners err with exaggeratedly-cut or outlandishly-fabric’d suits, overly large or oddly-hued hats, ridiculous neckties, or just generally odious accessories and embellishments. The trick is to keep things as elegantly simple and classic as possible, perhaps even a little austere if you really don’t want anyone thinking you’re on your way to a costume ball.

Actor and musician Terrence Howard obviously understands this principle perfectly. The other night at the premiere of a new Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that he’s starring in, Howard shone in two pieces of a three-piece black pinstriped suit, a generously-cuffed and collared white dress shirt, a black silk pindot tie, and a classic black fedora, all custom-made by Californian bespoke tailor David Heil of David August. It was dramatic without being theatrical, an important distinction for any aspiring MOTH to master.

To that end, Uniqlo has enlisted Tim Hamilton to stitch up a microcollection, on the heels of Loden Dager’s work for them earlier this year.
There’s nothing like a little competition to stir the blood.

The nominations for the CFDA Awards were announced today, with Kempt favorites Thom Browne and Tom Ford picking up menswear nods, along with Michael Bastian. Due respect to Mr. Bastian, but we’re more excited about seeing the two T(h)oms face off. We like to think of it as bare chest vs. bare ankle. Mr. Browne took the prize last year, but we wouldn’t put it past him to bring it home again.

Having said that, our heart is with Mr. Ford.

Mashups of high and low fashion will always have a certain high-concept appeal, but it shouldn’t stop us from distinguishing between a good idea and a bad idea. And high-top wingtips are certainly the latter. Luckily, like pachinko and monster attacks, these unfortunate creations are currently confined to Japan, where they will hopefully remain. (We’re looking at you, Kanye.)

The problem isn’t just the spaceman look of the sneaker half. This is the rare mashup that manages to degrade both sides of the equation. Wearing them in place of actual wingtips would be unthinkable, but they’re too jarring to work as sneakers either. It’s hard to imagine even the most die-hard sneakerheads putting in the necessary time and care to keep the tips properly polished and oiled. After that, you’re left with something that’s more idea than shoe.

On the other hand, they’ll go perfectly with your tuxedo sweatsuit.

Photographed by our fearless lensman, Patrick McMullan.

The prevalence of the Sleek Grey Suit among men of style these days is aesthetically appealing but not terribly interesting, sartorially speaking. But here comes Stanley Tucci to show us how it should be done.

Tucci, the acclaimed actor (and also writer, producer and director) who currently has seven different movies in production, elevated the SGS to a whole new level with the simple addition of a dashing, brilliantly hued scarf.

Overpowering with most other outfits, it was the perfect topnote to the SGS by Hugo Boss Tucci wore the other night to the premiere of Married Life, hosted by fellow MOTH Andrew Saffir’s Cinema Society and designer Nicole Miller. The classic specs insouciantly hanging off the breast pocket are a nice touch too.

All we were able to discover about the scarf’s provenance is that Tucci purchased it at a small boutique in Belgium, but if you’re looking for something similar we suggest a trip to Etro. It won’t turn you into Tucci, but it’ll help your suit out no end.

The style arbiters at the New York Times’ T Magazine have revealed what was behind the artful dishevelment of recently deceased pundit William F. Buckley Jr.: dressing up was simply beneath him.

Buckley adopted the blueblood uniform of The Millbrook School, the sort of upper crusty institution where the preppy look was born back in the day, they write, and never grew out of it.

“He came from an era and background where if you looked like you spent too much time thinking about clothes, then everything else was suspect,” the great Alan Flusser tells T. “[He was] anti-fashion in the original sense of the term.” Hence the moth-eaten Shetland sweaters. Buckley himself once wrote that if left alone he would “permit [my] standards of personal dress to deteriorate to the level of the downright offensive.”

While the homage was no doubt unintentional, Preppy style was once again back in full force at the recent Premiere Vision menswear trade show. And so Buckley’s style lives on in the form of thousands of pastel-hued polo shirts.

The 21st century has really fallen behind in the portable bar department. In the old days, a self-respecting gentleman wouldn’t dream of setting off on a voyage without something in reserve. And in the heyday of the trunk, there was a specific solution at hand.

Stocking more than twenty bottles of your choosing and a healthy selection of Irish crystal, this rosewood trunk is an open invitation to turn your spring picnic into a police-baiting outdoor hootenanny. Of course, luggage has always had its own unique style, but there’s nothing wrong with adding a little function into the mix.

Charlie Chaplin would be proud.

Dear Spike:

We love the chunky tortoiseshell specs—they bring out the auteur in you. The rat fur epaulettes, not so much. The diamond earring—your call, brother. But seriously, what’s up with the rodent pelt?
The leather ball cap also smacks a little too much of a semi-inflated pig’s bladder, if you want to know the truth of it. And we don’t get the super-shiny Moncler jacket thing. It looks like pleather, and probably leaves a nasty rash. And those giant patches they stick on ‘em are hideous. Call up Michael Stipe. Maybe he could give you a lesson in layering.

Oh and by the way—what the fuck is that on the inseam of your pants?

Sincerely,

You don’t often hear the “core values” and “Keith Richards” in the same sentence. But we’re always open to new ideas.

Fresh off their Gorbachev campaign, Louis Vuitton has decided to side with another crumbling icon for their “core values” campaign. Other than embodying a kind of boho shabby-chic, we doubt anyone would have chosen Richards as a style icon, but Vuitton sees him more as a lifestyle icon. This pic, photographed by the legendary Annie Liebowitz, captures what seems like a fairly typical moment in Keef’s existence: he is killing time in an anonymous luxury suite, with objects of luxury scattered carelessly around him. And, naturally, the closest object is his Louis Vuitton guitar case, which doubles as an impromptu tea tray.

It’s tempting to read this as another luxury/rock-and-roll tie-in, but LV seems to have more in mind than just that. They aren’t making guitar cases just yet, but they may want you to think of your case as just that, and throw it around in the same way Keith does. After all, luxury has rarely been about being careful.

(Keith reportedly responded to the pic by saying “it looks like a Rembrandt!” We imagine he means this one, which is appropriately shambling.)

Photographed by our fearless lensman, Patrick McMullan.

The restaurants bearing the Mr. Chow moniker are known as much for their haute-chinois cuisine and glittering clientele as their sophisticated, understated elegance. Small wonder then that the real Mr. Chow embodies the latter perfectly.

We’ve never had the pleasure of dining at the original London location, opened in 1968, but the super-stylish New York outpost on E. 57th St. is one of our favorite restaurants in the world. The man behind it all, Michael Chow, is also an actor of note and an art collector extraordinaire whose portrait has been painted by David Hockney and Jean-Michel Basquiat, among others.

The other night at his Beverly Hills branch, Chow hosted a party for Julian Schnabel following his opening at the Gagosian Gallery. He looked smashing in his trademark Cutler & Gross specs and a bespoke three-piece black pinstripe suit with a ticket pocket, white dress shirt, and solid blue silk tie, all custom-ordered from Hermes. And he was cleverly shod to boot - by bespoke bootmaker George Cleverly of London, that is.

We suggest Loake, a family-owned British marque that’s been hand-making shoes since 1880, and catching the eye of everyone up to the queen. They’re getting some recognition lately as they get ready to cross over to the States. Their catalog may not be varied, but it’s certainly broad, including our favorites the Norwich (pictured), the Chester 2 and the 290, if you’re in the mood for a beetle boot.

Like ideas, brands can come from anywhere. All you need is an advertising budget, a storefront and a dream.

It turns out JC Penney has all three. They’re starting up their largest product line ever, American Living, with an ad push unlike anything a department store brand has ever seen.

The line is designed by Ralph Lauren, but the ads are the real show. The NYT describes this one as “scenes from an idealized America,” which is pretty on the nose. (A shame they used a song from Alison Krauss’ collaboration with the very British Robert Plant.)

But the ads can’t paper over the fact that this is still a department store brand, and one with an image more or less the same as mainstays like Wrangler and Wal-Mart’s unfortunately named Faded Glory line. Add in the fact that the line is going on markdown less than a month after it arrives in stores, and you’ve got a very familiar story on your hands.

The latest peek comes from Roger Moenks, who traversed the western world for pictures of the inheriting class in their natural habitat. The result is Inheriting Beauty, a quick tour of the ultra-rich.

The most recognizable faces are local, like this shot of Amanda Hearst, Forbes Magazine’s seventh hottest billionaire heiress. As tabloid fodder, she’s probably used to a more impromptu form of photography, but this shot makes her look positively domestic. It’s not a bad couch, either.

The old world heiresses put the East Coast to shame. This alluring shot is of Maria Buccellati, a jewelry heiress with a fine art collection and a revealing fashion sense.

Another product of old-world luxury, Olivia Chantecaille was born into the cosmetics industry, and inherited beauty in every sense. Her mother was a makeup pioneer at Estee Lauder, and Olivia has made waves with a few new ideas of her own.

From Hard Day’s Night to Top of the Pops (R.I.P.), the Brits have always had a knack for filming music. Their latest good idea is the Black Cab Sessions, a web video series filmed from the back of a London cab.

The pay for the gig is the price of a cab ride, flagged down on the day of the shoot. The cabbie introduces the band, or often enough, just the frontman. (The cab’s aren’t big, after all.) The songs are all recorded in one take, usually on the way from the hotel to the venue, so the sessions have an immediacy and intimacy that’s increasingly rare in music. The camera periodically pans across the street for a little incidental London scenery, just so you don’t forget where you are.

The rides themselves vary, from the Raveonettes’ gridlocked session to the National’s long dark cab ride home. Bill Callahan (also known as Smog) gets a little unintended accompaniment from passing cars, but it only adds to the urban ambience. Spoon’s Britt Daniel is effortlessly perfect as always (and still rocking the Ray-Bans) while Okkervil River’s Will Sheff turns in a harmonica-assisted version of Big Star’s “Big Black Car.”

Sung, unfortunately, in an orange minicab.

Photographed by our fearless lensman, Patrick McMullan.

In his capacity as a graphic design demigod, Chip Kidd routinely transforms books into objets d’art. In the course of a celebrated career he’s done dazzling dustjackets for everyone from John Updike to Bret Easton Ellis. Some of his work, like the famous dinosaur skeleton he designed for Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, even takes on a life of its own.

Kidd, an accomplished author as well, also cuts quite a figure when he’s out on the town, as evidenced by this snap from the fete for his latest novel, The Learners. He’s sporting a café-au-lait colored wool tone-on-tone stripe suit by Brioni, a blue and white striped shirt with a contrasting “club” collar from Ralph Lauren, and a solid blue silk tie ditto. His trademark vintage-style specs were custom-ordered from Anglo American Optical—the MOTH-as-aesthete’s choice.

We’ve been waiting for the second coming of the cummerbund, but we didn’t think it would look like this.

This Japanese belly warmer, called a haramaki, is threatening to go mainstream. Adapted from a piece of samurai armor, the midriff scarf’s popularity is currently limited to bikers, skiers and the pregnant. While that may not seem like fertile crossover territory, it hasn’t stopped the garment from making waves online as the next big thing in layering.

We can easily picture it on a runway, but we offer the following request: Please, please restrain yourselves.

Please.

Photographed by Clint Spaulding / Patrick McMullan.com

It’s high time for a tip of the hat to our fearless MOTH photographer Patrick McMullan, no slouch in the dressing department in his own right. He makes it look easy, but we honestly don’t know how he keeps up the pace.

The other night at a book bash in Los Angeles for his latest collection of pix, Glamour Girls —which boasts 1400 hotties—Patrick got cozy with a very glam gal indeed, haute-burlesque queen Dita Von Teese (keeping one hand firmly on his Nikon, natch). Dita couldn’t keep her hands off his black pinstripe Domenico Vacca suit, and can’t say we blame her; Vacca’s threads are some of the finest around.

Call it the caress of one artist to another.
