Rock ‘n’ Roll Music

With the “rock look” flying around so much these days—we’re looking at you, John—it’s easy to forget the people who crafted that look in the first place: the musicians, but more importantly the photographers.

Scandinavian photographer Eric Broms’ is one of the more recent arrivals to the scene, but his work is a pretty good example of it. His subjects range from icons like Madonna and Debbie Harry to the more primal flair of Mr. James Osterberg (also known as Iggy Pop.)

Going Rogue

If ever you find yourself in Maine, on a whale-watching expedition or, perhaps more likely, a hunt for the country’s best lobster roll, you can now dress the part.

Rogues Gallery, a small label known for its vintage inspired t-shirts and ultra soft flannel button-ups, has just opened its first shop at 41 Wharf Street in Portland. Located in a 19th Century industrial building, the store’s wrought-iron entryway, concrete slab walls and pine plank floors reflect the antiquated aesthetic the brand is known for. The store will carry the entire men’s line, and we hear that a women’s line is also in the works.

Because there’s nothing sexier than a woman in flannel.

Sex, drugs, rock & roll—they aren’t exactly hallmarks of mature sophistication, or at least not yet. But there’s no act so wild it can’t be cleaned up by a few well-placed changes. Case in point, Rock Ambassador/Designer John Varvatos’ Spring ‘08 Converse by John Varvatos ad campaign.

It seems that Danny Clinch, the man who managed to make even Alice Cooper look dapper, has handed over the lens to hipstographer Ryan McGinley in the Get Chucked campaign. We’d gladly spend the day browsing McGinley’s portfolio of gloriously happy nudes engaging in normal daily activities (yes, even communal bathing), so we’re excited about the direction he’ll take the ads, especially since they’ll actually revolve around clothing.

Everyone loves a challenge.

Moscot Love

If last year’s overwhelming resurgence of Ray Ban Wayfarers taught us anything, it’s that in matters of eyewear, everyone looks cooler in old stuff. Earnest Sewn—the masters of coopting quirky-but-classic brands—will take the idea one step further and about a century back, when Moscot’s pop-up shop opens in Earnest Sewn’s MPD store this spring.

Paying homage to the New York eyeglass store that opened in 1915 (that’s a solid 22 years pre-Ray Ban and 68 years pre-Risky Business), the shop will offer Moscot’s Original eyeglass and sunglass frames, as well as two new, collaborative, limited edition styles: the Lemtosh Frame in Buffalo Horn and a new, lighter Blond. So you can take a little chance without running the risk of resembling 1985 Tom Cruise.

The word “effortless” gets tossed around a lot, but when you’re putting out a TV show from your basement, you’ve probably earned it. Producer/mastermind Nigel Godrich (the genius behind Radiohead’s OK Computer) has been doing just that for most of 2007, and after a year of limbo they’re finally making it to the small screen.

Tom Ford Does Vegas (He Also Opens a Store There)

If it’s possible to add more sex to Vegas, we’re pretty confident there’s only one man for the job. Word is that Tom Ford, the designer who brought sexy back in the land of women’s attire before moving on to menswear, is opening a flagship in the heart of Las Vegas. The Gucci-rivaling storefront will be located in the new CityCenter development, right on the strip (of course).

Seems like an obvious next step from the man who brought us the G shaped bikini wax—a trend that, we have no doubt, really hit home in the City of Sin. The store is said to have a similar aesthetic as the original Madison Avenue location, but our guess is that they’ll be moving more merchandise in the new digs (it’s Vegas, after all). Las Vegas and Tom Ford—some things were just meant to be.
